    88 5.7L backfiring through TBI

This started out as an intermittent SES light with the engine occasionally stumbling under acceleration. The only code was 12. Now, the engine back fires though the TBI and has little to no power. Fuel pressure is good. Plug wires are fine. Cap and rotor look good. Had a spare ignition...

Replacing valves in TBI 350 heads

The valve seals in my '88 350 were shot. The engine puffed blue smoke on cold start-up. I decided to pull the heads and replace the seals. The valves are all straight and the guides do not have significant play. I mic'd 'em and they appear to be ok. Some of the intake valves appear to have...

    Electric Cooling Fan Conversion

I installed a condenser pusher fan last weekend. Used a 4 prong relay and connected the switched power line to the AC compressor clutch positive lead. Works great. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

I'd love to see a pic of that electric lawnmower.

    Electric Cooling Fan Conversion

Hey man Thanks for the feedback. I already moved the sensor to lower radiator hose using the adapter mentioned in a previous comment. I was never really happy with the t-stat housing mount but it was the solution that worked. (thanks everyone for the feedback.) I found one plug available in...

Refrigerant blowing out of AC compressor

Condenser coil is new; only 3 months old. Air flow is better with the electric fans. However, I plan to put a helper fan on the condenser. I'll check the pressures on Sat in the middle of the day at 90 degrees. If its too high, I'll adjust it. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

Refrigerant blowing out of AC compressor

Last night, I pulled the system apart and changed the orifice tube, A/C pressure valve and high pressure switch. Pulled a vacuum and recharged it with 40 oz. R134a and 150 PAG oil. Pressures were 40 / 250 @ 70 degrees. Temp at the vent was 40 degrees. It was frosty in the cab this morning...

Refrigerant blowing out of AC compressor

This is my week of weird stuff happening on the truck (88 C1500 5.7L). Saturday, the truck was idling in the driveway to test the new cooling fans and out of nowhere the compressor blew refrigerant out of the back. The entire AC system was replaced in May 2018. The pressures were set...

    Electric Cooling Fan Conversion

I used 620-634 which is the same as the Four Seasons 76034. The local Autozone price matched to the Rockauto price of $134. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

    Electric Cooling Fan Conversion

That's an awesome idea. I hadn't thought about using an inline adapter. What size is the hose at the t-stat? 1.25" or 1.50"? Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

    Electric Cooling Fan Conversion

I finally got tired of the noise and inefficiency of the mechanical fan on my 88 5.7L. The temp would rise sitting in Atlanta traffic. The clutch likely needed to be replaced but decided to switch to electric fans. This is my daily driver and it needs to be reliable. There are a number of...

    Thinner head gaskets on a 88 5.7L

I plan to pull the heads on my 88 5.7L. They are original and need to be rebuilt. The valve seals are leaking. Rather than milling 0.10" off the heads to bump compression, I was thinking about using a thinner head gasket. The OEM replacement is 0.41" compressed. FelPro has a 0.25" gasket...

    A/c rebuild

I did this in my 88 C1500 last month. System had been converted to R134 by PO but did not have pressure. Orifice tube had compressor debris in it. I bought the 4 Seasons compressor kit, condenser and hose set at Rockauto. Flushed the evaporator. I bought extra 150 PAG oil, emptied the PAG...

Replaced intake gasket, now I get a loud ticking noise on cold start ups

None that I have experienced. Done it a number of times. I did it this time due to the amount of sludge in the motor and the lack of use. The PO put 5K miles on it in 9 years. You can run Marvels Mystery Oil instead of ATF. I use the heavier weight oil to off set the lighter weight ATF...

Replaced intake gasket, now I get a loud ticking noise on cold start ups

I had the same problem. I changed the oil. Put in 4 quarts of 15W40 and 1 quart of ATF. I noticed a reduction in the lifter ticking after an hour of running. Ran the mixture for 1,000 miles and changed it to straight 15W40. The lifter ticking is hardly noticeable. The detergents in the ATF...

Heavy White Smoke Only On Startup

Had the same problem. Here's the process I used last month: - Pull the spark plugs. Look for one or two that are bright white. - Run a compression test on the cylinders. Look for a low cylinder. If all are within 5lbs or so, it's likely your intake gasket. Otherwise, the bright white plug...

    Skip White Performance Distributor

Another post on here mentioned the Skip White distributor. My 88 had the original distributor and the bearings were worn. It was wobbling. I decided to give it a try. So, far it has been great. The truck is basically stock and I was not looking for a high performance distributor. For $69...

    88 C1500 5.7L white smoke in exhaust

I plan to drive it daily and keep it mostly stock. I like the unmolested look. FWIW - You should keep the TBI. The TBI rebuild is $30 and takes an hour. You can get a lot of performance out of the TBI with very little cost. A performance chip is $100ish. Very cheap. The carb swap will work...

    88 C1500 5.7L white smoke in exhaust

Changed the IAC and rebuilt the TBI. All issues related to the white smoke seem to be gone. Replacing the EGR valve this weekend. Only issue remaining is a little blue smoke at start up in the morning. Probably worn out valve seals. It's a 30 year old truck problem that will be solved later...

    Complete loss of 12V power......

Battery was the problem. The cell next to the ground terminal registered 0.6V. Should be 2.0V. I think it was likely dead and the jump start and charge helped open the circuit. All of the wiring is fine. Tested it with a DMM and had very little resistance. Thanks for the comments.

    Complete loss of 12V power......

88 C1500 5.7L 144K miles. I've only owned the truck a few weeks. It has been driven daily for the last two weeks. Yesterday, took my son the park. The truck was parked for an hour or so. Returned to start it and there was no power. Nothing worked. There was no response from turning the...

    88 C1500 5.7L white smoke in exhaust

So, new intake gaskets did not solve white smoke problem. Smoke smells acrid / acidic. So it's not antifreeze. Noticed the transmission is shifting late.......engine seems to stay engage in gears longer than normal and then shifts hard to the next gear. Acts like my Duramax in trailer mode...

    88 C1500 5.7L white smoke in exhaust

I may replace the engine if the intake gaskets don't solve the problem. The gaskets came with the truck. No cost in the replacement other than time and fluids. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

    88 C1500 5.7L white smoke in exhaust

Decided to replace the intake gaskets today. Plenty of sludge in the lifter valley. Need to finish dressing the engine tomorrow night and get it back on the road.

    88 C1500 5.7L white smoke in exhaust

Last owner drove it 5K miles in 10 years. He never ran it hot. Parked it as soon as the smoke started. The smoke does not smell sweet but is very moist. Tailpipe drips water. It starts to smoke after warming up. Probably after the thermostat opens up. I cleaned at least a pound of sludge out...
