Can someone share a tip with me? I haven't written up my 'introductory' post as a new user yet, but I have read lots of posts about fuel mileage.
This is a new experience for me. 1995 305, no idea on the history of maintenance on the motor, 175,000 miles with my son and I doing as much tuneup/updates as I can muster based on my research here. New ignition system (plugs, wires, distributor, sensors), Most every sensor is new (I think the oil pressure sensor is original), air system is clean, filter clean, fuel filter changed today, coolant system clean, leaks stopped, new temp sensor and thermostat. Engine starts great, runs like a top, idles very smoothly.
It has 3.73 rear end and is newly outfitted with 33x12.5x20" offset rims with Kenda RT tires. Front diff fluid changed (came out gray and very thick, probably nearly 30 yrs old!) Transfer case looked pretty good/fresh, rear diff fluid dark but still recognizable. Tranny pan dropped no concerns, fluid changed twice (had to do it again due to hard shift between 1 and 2 and didn't know there wasn't supposed to be 3 springs in the accumulator).
My son isn't hard on the gas and I have driven it a bit too. We believe it is a 25 gallon tank (26?) but since gas gauge starts out way above E, when it gets to about 200 miles it is about on half tank and it is time to fill it. Haven't figured out how to fix that yet. But calculating mileage on about 20 gallons and getting about 200-210 miles is about 10 miles per gallon. This is mostly town driving but he drives on the highway to work about 35 mile round trip.
Since tuneup, new ignition/sensors and all the fluid changes are recent we are content to give it another tank or two but certainly we can expect more than 10 mpg with a 305? Outside of going back to more reasonable tires/rims (and checking the brakes aren't hanging up) is there another trick to getting at least 13 or 14?
My 2015 suburban with all the computers and high pressure fuel injection still only averages 15-16mpg so probably I will never see that with this truck.
Thanks!
