I have always had worse mileage at 55-65 than I do at 75-80. Above 80 the mileage tanks a bit because the box like aero. Even my stock L31 liked being at 2,000-2,500 rpm for the best mileage. 70 mph was 2,000 rpm with the stock 4L60E and 3.42s.
Those speeds have your motor running closer to the peak of the torque curve. If you listen carefully you can hear the drone in the motor, almost sounds like a cat purring.

I know they do, if you watch it in a datalog, the intake vacuum and spark advance increase and it feels like the the engine is practically coasting along.

Old video clip I made years ago, with my Ram to show why 4.56s were great in those trucks. I was actually getting better mileage with 4.56s than I did with 3.55s. I had a custom ground 212/212 @ 0.050 on a 114 LSA cam in it.

I filled up today and found I got a whopping 9 mpg over this tank. Not 19... just 9. I think it's because it was almost all in-town and stop and go traffic driving and a lot of wasted gas trying to get all the smog diagnostics to run. My last tank was 12 mpg driving like I normally do.

So there you go. Drive like an idiot and give up a quarter of your gas mileage. :33:
Lmao I just did that took a long time and well over 400 miles. Your mpg should go up when all the emissions is ready

Can someone share a tip with me? I haven't written up my 'introductory' post as a new user yet, but I have read lots of posts about fuel mileage.
This is a new experience for me. 1995 305, no idea on the history of maintenance on the motor, 175,000 miles with my son and I doing as much tuneup/updates as I can muster based on my research here. New ignition system (plugs, wires, distributor, sensors), Most every sensor is new (I think the oil pressure sensor is original), air system is clean, filter clean, fuel filter changed today, coolant system clean, leaks stopped, new temp sensor and thermostat. Engine starts great, runs like a top, idles very smoothly.

It has 3.73 rear end and is newly outfitted with 33x12.5x20" offset rims with Kenda RT tires. Front diff fluid changed (came out gray and very thick, probably nearly 30 yrs old!) Transfer case looked pretty good/fresh, rear diff fluid dark but still recognizable. Tranny pan dropped no concerns, fluid changed twice (had to do it again due to hard shift between 1 and 2 and didn't know there wasn't supposed to be 3 springs in the accumulator).

My son isn't hard on the gas and I have driven it a bit too. We believe it is a 25 gallon tank (26?) but since gas gauge starts out way above E, when it gets to about 200 miles it is about on half tank and it is time to fill it. Haven't figured out how to fix that yet. But calculating mileage on about 20 gallons and getting about 200-210 miles is about 10 miles per gallon. This is mostly town driving but he drives on the highway to work about 35 mile round trip.

Since tuneup, new ignition/sensors and all the fluid changes are recent we are content to give it another tank or two but certainly we can expect more than 10 mpg with a 305? Outside of going back to more reasonable tires/rims (and checking the brakes aren't hanging up) is there another trick to getting at least 13 or 14?

My 2015 suburban with all the computers and high pressure fuel injection still only averages 15-16mpg so probably I will never see that with this truck.

Thanks!

Lose the bro-dozer wheels and tires, un-crank the torsion bars, and maybe get another 2 mpgs. 11-13 around town is not abnormal.

sigh, my son has to live his 16 yr old dream of having the bro-dozer look. I'm going to let him get it out of his system. I do believe the look/feel will grow less exciting to him and we will transition back to more 'normal' wheels and rims. However the 4" lift kit likely will stay, too much work to undo it. I agree, can't have higher profile and less wind resistance...

With 19, you are doing well. What fuel are you using? If you are using premium, you don't need it, and can save money that way.

With 19 we are doing well? 19? We are getting about 10 mpg!. I was hoping to maybe hit 13 in a combo of city and highway driving? He doesn't get on the gas much, he also realizes that gas prices have spiked and the first hour he is working on the job is just to pay to fill the tank from the cost of getting to work and back.

We use standard non-premium gas I think it is 87 octane but in MI they put ethanol in everything.

Was hoping a new fuel filter might help fuel get there more efficiently.

Would a throttle body spacer help at all with mileage?

also bought the truck with a new dual exhaust. It comes right off manifolds on each side and joins in a Flowmaster 40 muffler. The stock cats were empty or disintegrated and were not replaced. The truck is running without its (single) O2 sensor which was precat I'm told. I hope to weld in high flow cats one on each pipe and one of the 2 will have a bung to allow the O2 sensor to reattached. Perhaps that will help a bit?
