Hey guys,

1994 K1500 GMC 5.7 Z-71

Getting rid of the worthless CS130 alternator and upgrading to an AD244 for all the obvious reasons.

I've bought a genuine GM (supposedly) AD244, # GM 15279852, 145 amp alternator that supposedly fits GM vehicles from 1996 to 2005.

I have about 4 various forum postings here, and 3 or 4 YouTube videos showing and stating that there's just a "slight" mismatch on the one, inboard mounting hole. Some show just filing the hole oblong to fit, with many just hogging the hole out a bit with a drill bit. The mismatch is variously stated to be anywhere from 1/16" to 1/4". Some even say if you are willing to just go to a smaller diameter bolt, that will fit up. The mismatch is so slight that a smaller bolt will fit the holes.

THEN, there's MY case. As you can see from the pics, my mismatch is huge!! It's more like a 3/4" mismatch!

So, mine is a standard CS130, and I am swapping to a standard AD244, just like everyone I've spent HOURS researching. But see the pics, and the mounting mismatch I've got!! What's my problem here???

Thanks!!

If the part # you listed is correct, what you have is an alternator for a Chevy Equinox w/ a 3.4l engine. Look for one from a full size truck.

The one I use is for a 2003 5.3L Tahoe. Fit the TBIs and TPIs I have used it on using smaller mounting bolts. GM built the same style alternator with several different sized mounting footprints.

turn it upside down, does the mounting pads now exist in the same plane( as in, youre able to rotate it closer to the mounting hole?) the alternator pictured doesnt have a standard mounting ear setup, it has a offset on the one side that is meant to minimize vibrations and stuff for a different motor.

Ok guys, I think I finally got the scoop on this, after hours of research. I am somewhat at a loss as to why this info was difficult to find. The TBI trucks sometimes seem like they're the "red-headed stepchild" and quite neglected regarding available info. Not all of us have Vortecs, even if we wish we did!!

In a nutshell, it seems to basically boil down to this: most cars of this early 90's and up era apparently use a 6.062" center to center bolt hole dimension. The trucks on the other hand, have alternators with a 5.455" dimension. Of course, they are not interchangeable, as evidenced by my pics. One of the posts I had found and used for alternator upgrades recommended the alternator I bought as being a good buy and good for the swap. NOT!!

I don't know why, but this simple difference is not detailed nor discussed in the dozens of websites I searched. It is however, critical info, (of course!) I wonder why they even made this small .6" difference between car and truck alternators??

So anyway, if you want to do an upgrade and swap to a MUCH BETTER, AD244 alternator, just be sure you buy one for a 2005 or earlier TRUCK for the conversion!

(Pic shows details.)

Thanks for the replies!!
