A trick I learned in Vo-Tech many years ago - use pinstriping tape for masking in close. It gives you a sharp edge, it's easy to get straight, and it gives you a slightly wider edge to lay your masking tape on.

You should see @kennythewelder ' s truck album pictures. He polished his tailgate strip(and pretty much anything else aluminum on the truck). Looks gorgeous!
I think LMC or somebody else does. You can also mask and repaint, semi gloss black is what GM used. An Xacto knife and a few extra #11 blades will be helpful with this process.

You have to strip off the clear coat with paint stripper before you polish.
