I always thought it was pure Dino oil. Anyway, the point most are missing here is the base stock from which the oil is made. Group 5 are the "real" synthetics, the ones that make a high mileage engine leak. Most synthetics these days use group 3 and group 4 base stocks. Group 3 is what Dino oil is made from. The word synthetic now is mostly a marketing term since some judge granted petroleum companies the ability to use the word on anything refined enough. Group 5 is tough to find, and you won't find it at Walmart or most parts store shelves. Amsoil and Redline are 2 that come to mind who actually make a true group 5 synthetic. Castrol, Mobil 1, and Royal Purple are not.

like the Harley Syn3 crap....it's polymer base is dino....i always wondered how they can put 100% synthetic on the bottle.....Spectro is another good quality synthetic......i believe they have the group 5 offerings.....as does Belray.

i only run 25W60 Spectro in my hot rod shovelhead.....that's all she seems to like, LOL

I'm still in a fog trying to figure out all the posts about headlights and now this. I hope nobody starts a thread about windshield washer fluid. That would put me over the edge.

usuaslly when they say 100% synthetic and its not they get by with saying it because of the synthetic additives they put in there they are 100% synthetic, which seems redundant and stupid, but, as someone said some judge granted everyone ability to claim it as long as there some in there, so they use it willy nilly, its preference to most and knowledge to others, royal purple will always be deemed special to people. for me i use redline joe gibbs or bradd pen in everything, if i need an over the counter fix then pennzoil platinum. oil filters i stick with amsoil or wix. and even though transfluids are no different or power steering or anything i hit up my amsoil dealer for that stuff.

It's far from new, I've been using it exclusively for years now. If it starts to rain, just give your windshield a squirt and the rain will bead up and blow off the top of your windshield.

Muffler bearings are new and I got the winter air in the tires. All I need to do now is change the water in the battery to synthetic water. Should I change the battery filter too ?

i do use the RainX on my windshield...and the "fog" proof stuff inside too.......i like to see. at 70+ mph in reasonable rain i don't need my wipers, especially at night.

So far as I know, this doesn't apply to GM stock rear ends.

I cannot speak to his year model (88) but I'm almost certain you either got a G80 Locker (not a posi) or an open diff (not a posi). You can most definitely run synthetic in either a G80 or open diff, no problem, and probably handles heat a lot better.

A few months ago I pulled the old G80 out of my Suburban and put a Detroit (Eaton) Truetrac in, and the instructions included said basically the same as above. The Truetrac is a posi, except it uses torsion gears/pinions for friction. I'd rather run synth but I've read enough stories that the Truetrac doesn't like synth at all.
