When I bought my 91 w/350 the prvious owner said it needed the heads rebuilt / replaced. I ran seafoam through it, Lots of smoke, but the part that bothered me was the black goo that spewed from where the manifolds connect to the y pipe. Anyone think I should be looking into a replacement engine or a set of heads?
The black goo that is leaking from the exhaust is the sludge buildup that came out of your engine because of the seafoam treatment. That you have so much sludge as to be leaking out of your exhaust is not a great sign, but I wouldn't automatically write off the engine because of it.
Before worrying about rebuilding or replacing the heads/engine, do yourself a favor and get a compression check done. If the compression seems off, in that it is too low across the board, or a few cylinders are too low, do a leak-down test to determine if the valves or piston rings are to blame.
If you don't have the tools/experience to do a compression test and or leak down test, a competent shop should be able to do both for you at a minimal cost. If you go this route, make sure the shop writes down the exact compression #'s for you, and post 'em up here.
