When you design your enclosure just keep in mind that the compressor is air cooled so make sure it can still breath, I have seen them seize through over zealous sound deadening.

Good point. One of the more interesting DIY designs I’m looking at includes ventilation supplemented by a fan, along with some pretty clever sound baffling on the inlet and outlet vents.

On the elevated platform idea, I was thinking along the lines of a permanent location with dedicated piping routed throughout the shop. Or at least along the back wall where you can plug in with a hose/reel.

As Grimster pointed out, they certainly do need some air to breathe and stay 'cool'.

That's a great idea on the compressed air piping on the back wall. My Dad had that setup in our shop building, with a quick connection every 10-15 feet. Our building is 40x80 though so we needed a little more pipe....

When I was a kid my job was to sweep the shop when we were done. The shop is an old cattle barn with no doors on it, but closed in on 3/4 of the sides. Leaves get swept out, leaves blow back in 5 minutes later. Even this past year when we were working on my '95 my dad would pull the same ****. We've got some generic farm-store branded gas leaf blower from the 80s that we use to blow it out now.

Anyways, shop is coming along great. I dream of having a shop home. It is what my girlfriend and I want. Single story living area, big shop with a loft for additional storage and be able to fit all our vehicles inside in case the weather turns nasty. We are working very hard to be able to do that someday.

Having a loader would be nice. We use an old 1958 International Farmall 560 gasser with a bucket. It is a real workhorse. Needs a clutch and a transmission rebuild. You have to split the whole case apart to rebuild it. We keep pushing it off until it really needs it. It also has a finishing blade on the back for doing light dirt work and plowing the driveway.

Dedicated compressed air piping is a good idea, and something I've considered for this garage. Much nicer than having to uncoil and coil a long air hose every time I want to use it.

However, I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the raised platform concept. Depending on the height of the platform, accessing the compressor for routine maintenance might be tough. The larger concern is having that much mass (>100 lbs for a 20 gal unit) on a raised platform, and vibrating. To me, physics appears to be working against the concept. Then again, maybe it just requires more thought on my part.

Ventilation will definitely be a priority.

The local electrical cooperative is in the process of trimming trees along their powerlines, some of which are on the farm.

There was a largish branch overhanging the garage that should have been taken down when the tree guys were here in September, but we all missed it. So the coop crew took care of it while they were trimming trees around the house.

Enter the wood chipper, which made short work of it.

Removing that branch is one more thing off my mind. Glad to have it done. Particularly since I didn’t have to do it!

I never see a wood chipper anymore without thinking of that scene in Fargo...the movie, not the series.
Seeing your building in comparison to the Burb, shows how big it actually is pretty well. Looks like a mini me for my building (if it was brand new, not 40+ years old).

This is my current compressor, or the new version of it. It doesn't seem to walk when running and isn't terribly loud either. Enough air for an impact and bursts of die grinder usage. (I dream of a decent sized industrial compressor inside the shop thats being built in my mind.)

For a raised platform, I would either fab a steel platform or build one out of lumber solid enough to support the compressor and have room to manuever it into place. Bonus points for anchoring the compressor or putting railing around it like a deck as insurance.

Yeah, I’m the same way since seeing the movie Fargo - that wood chipper definitely played a major role!

Overall I’m happy with the size of the building. Larger would of course be better, but it’s large enough for my needs. Which is a good thing.
