On both of my 95's I noticed when the sun hit the dash just right I have the lettering for security on the black portion of the gauges. I know passlock was introduced in 98 for the domestic market. Does any one know when it might have been introduced in the foreign market?

The passlock system was introduced earlier in the gm market but was not used in the truck series until 97 when they installed for the first time with the third door as well. All gm gmt400’s cluster do have the security printed on them. My 95 and my 96 has it as well.

To add to the post above, not all 97s had it. I think only the later production run models were equiped with it. I have a 97 3 door Silverado that doesn't have passlock. My truck was built in January, 1997, in Canada. It was sold in Lafayette Louisiana at our local Chevy dealer new, in 97. I bought it from the original owner with 85,000 miles in 2002. The only options that the truck doesn't have is, leather, and power seats, although I did a bucket seat swap a few years ago, and added a custom built center console, with a custom built floor shifter. My truck does have every other option offered on a 97, C-1500, including the tow package.

I recently bought a 1998 Silverado. It should have Passlock. But the keys look like generic cheap keys.
How can I tell if Passlock is still activated, or if it's been tuned out or defeated in some other way?
I assume I could use HP Tuners comparison feature, but I don't have that software.

I think the only way you know for sure, is if you can get into the computer PCM enough to find out if it's been tuned out. Other than that, you don't know until the truck decides to make it work ( you try to start it, and it cranks okay but won't stay running but for a couple of seconds, and it continues to do this!). I went through this on my Burb, and the "relearn procedures" only work once or twice. Only thing that makes it go away is to have that function electronically deleted from the PCM. From what I have been told that requires the tuning program/software.

To add even more to this, I'd go so far as to say that 99.9% or maybe even all '97s don't have it. Over the years I've seen a couple people post that their "1997" has PassLock, but none of them have actually posted a title or VIN info to prove that the truck in question was a '97. I suspect that those folks might have actually had '98s and not known it.
