I might have to get my Vin run through

I've had ZERO luck running '88-'91 VINs through compnine.com. But '92 and up work fine. Just post or pm me the VIN. - SAC. No longer "PM". It's now called "Start a conversation" SAC.

That is weird. Sounds vaguely like the thing Bobby Hill does with his foot..."that's my purse, I don't know you!"
For all the non Texans and those unfamiliar with"King of the Hill" there's an episode called "Bobby Goes Nuts", that will explain a lot. May be a little uncomfortable watching for some of you fellas though!

The vin sites claim to accurate. But the reality is how much effort they want to put into the actual gathering of existing information. We have big advantage over other manufacturers as GM tells you right up front, on every vehicle equipped with a Service Parts Identification Tag, Exact Model Code, and all options it was built with. In the service manual for your year truck, suv, etc, all the three digit option codes available for that year are listed. So there won't be code for a convertible, or a 500 cubic inch. Only what you could get that year. It narrows down the list if your wanting to decode what your truck has.
The first twenty pages of the service manual explain the " birth " of your truck what it is, what it's got, and the three digit code it speaks.
As Mr. Shurkey, calls it, at the "treasure yard" , don't know exactly what? Drop the glove box door check the codes, get treasure!
Your using the service manual, vehicle information section will give you more information than any pay vin or free vin website. And the manuals are free here to download. What a deal! Good luck!

That assumes you A) have the glove box lid, B) it's original to the truck, C) the sticker is still attached, and D) it's still legible.

Agreed if you can verify the above that your method works well, but VIN decoders are generally pretty accurate, especially for vehicles with a large following.

It's not an assumption. The glove box door is there with the information until you know otherwise.
Where do vin decoders get the information. Manufacturer specific and DOT regulatory. There is no magic.
