Weird, at a loss. Need to learn how to test electrical circuits.....

Thats a just a kinda cylinder test.
Hot engine remove all plugs, install compression tester, throttle wide open spin with starter. Total compression cylinder pressure.
Any less than service minimums, continue with Differential Cylinder test. Piston at TDC.
Two gauge manifold metered pressure in read loss percentage. Where from Rings- crankcase; Intake valve - throttle body; Exhaust valve - exhaust pipe/ outlet. Good luck.

If you have service manuals CK1 is sevice driveabilty maintenance. CK2 is unit repair begins section 8 basic refresher testing electrical circuits= power, grounds, continuity. Wire repair, connectors, soldering. And on to systems and wire diagrams, locations.
It's a gold mine, it's all there. Good luck.

Ok.
New dizzy in, she fired right up but I definitely need to set the timing.
Here's old distributor with .050 of vertical play and worn gears:
1. Turning the distributor does not change the timing. It changes the synchronization of the cam sensor signal to the crank sensor signal. It also changes the alignment of the rotor tip to the distributor cap plug wire terminal. These are important...but they don't change the ignition timing.

2. Vertical play is almost a non-issue. Every GM distributor has heaps of vertical play. In use, the helical angle of the gears, plus the drag from the oil pump ensure that the distributor gear is pushed "up" against the thrust washers.

1)) Yes. 'set the timing' was a poor choice of words. Set the cam retard to +/- 2 degrees would be correct.
2) I thought I read somewhere that GM
had a a listed tolerance for that.

Got DashCommand to recognize CMP offset today. Also purchased Torque Pro app. and will manually install PID tomorrow so I can compare the two.
DashCommand shows that I'm at -6.1* at 1100 RPM.

Where do I start........
I'll definitely be removing valve covers to do some checks and I know I probably have a fuel injector(s) issue.
Time to light up a cigar for a smoke test.
