Done A lot of research and haven't found anything conclusive, one guy will say one thing and someone else will say another. I have a 1988 Chevy k1500. 350 motor, 5 speed manual trans, 4x4. What tranny is it? From what I understand there is a muncie version and the nv3500 and one other one? Also what fluid should I run? Currently Ive heard Syncromesh and regular gear lube. Anyone have a definitive answer? I have the original service manual for the truck and next to manual transmission the fluid column is blank!

If it's a 5 Speed (4 + OD + R) it should be the NV3500. The SM465 (Muncie) is a 4 speed (L + 3 + R).

NV3500 takes the syncromesh stuff. Muncie takes plain gear oil.

An 88 should be the Getrag, the 5LM60 or whatever.
Agreed, as for fluid, it's best to go to the dealer and pay their ridiculous price for the designed fluid. Many use the Amsoil substitute with good results. I've read that alot of people just put 5w30 in their 5lm60. Your truck your choice.

OK Thanks! Definitely not just gonna run 5w30. but hell Im pretty sure that the fluid I drained out of it when I bought it was just straight gear oil and it hasn't blown up yet!

Sorry to jump in and ask a question here, I have a 305 bolted to a NV3500, I want to swap a 350 in, should I just wait till I can swap 350 and a NV4500 or other heavy manual tranny in at the same time?

Depends on how abusive you are with it, if you're reasonable, and it's in good shape, I don't see any reason it can't hold a TBI 350.

I've read some people say going to a NV4500 is better than the NV3500, I want the truck to last a long time and be able to pull my camper around a bit, the more bullet proof it is the better, since I want a 350 figured it'd be a good time to throw a bigger tranny in, then save the 305 and NV3500 for another project truck later on

I think this tranny may need a rebuild soon it's original with 246,*** km
