I can think of one easy way actually to convert to an external pump set up and that is using the pickup assembly from a Diesel GMT400 since they use an external lift pump much like what you want to do. you may need to cut and flare the lines on it but thats the easiest way i could think of. In fact if i do end up carbing my K3500 project when i get that truck back that is exactly how im going to go about it.

But then your getting into the use of a mechanical fuel because you will burn up an external electric pump due to not having a sump setup. I changed my setup back to stock because a mechanical just wasn't cutting it.

I'll use the holley electric fuel pump as an example. Most aftermarket electric pumps are meant to push fuel not pull. When you use the stock pump it is down in the tank so it pushing the fuel up the pick up tube. When the pump is outside the tank it is having to pull it up the pickup tube. Yes it will work but after talking to holley and other manufacturers they suggested to do an in tank pump because you will be rebuilding it every couple months unless you sump the tank. There is a write up on ls1truck on how to sump these tanks. I also would stay away from a mechanical pump because after sitting all day at work the truck would crank and crank trying to build fuel pressure. There is a reason most pumps are in tank now

Ok I was just curious! Because I run a holley electric vane pump on mine and just burnt it up recently but was told from holley that most likely that it was from running a dead head regulator so now am running a bypass style regulator! So we will see once!
