If you don't have a good ground path, your engine can ground through other things it's not supposed to and cause problems. I wouldn't worry about driving it home, but I would fix it ASAP. I haven't heard of throttle cables being an issue like on older vehicles, but back in the day it was common for the ground strap to rust out and then the throttle cable would weld itself internally.
