The rear main seal is a 1 peace seal. You have to drop the transmission to replace the seal, not the oil pan like the old V-8s were. When you go to the parts store and get one you will see what I am talking about. It looks like any other seal, EG brake rotor seal, transmission rear seal, ECT.

Word, the trans has to at least be slid back enough to get to the seal, you will also need to remove the flexplate or flywheel depending on what trans you have.

I am fixing to replace the transmission (OD is not working on this one) so, I figure while the transmission is out I can replace the rear main seal.

Besides having to remove the automatic transmission and its flexplate, Can the rear main seal be replaced without having to drop the oil pan?

Yes you can do the rear main without touching the oil pan, I have done it several times.
