@Road Trip

Other than going through what drifter went through, is there a way to know that the gear was installed correctly by the manufacturer?

It’s been a while now, but I think mine had a dimple and an engraved mark that when aligned put the rotor between the cam sensor and the #8 triangle. Not sure if all distributors include those markings or not.
from what ive seen they all have the dimple, but not the paint mark you line it up with on the shaft. but as with my case it didnt matter. i would also like to know this, since some of my family has the same engine.

Heres a pic of what the delco dist. Has.

Here’s what the manual says (paragraphs 2 and 3) - when the dimple and pin are aligned the rotor should point to the distributor cap screw tab at the flat part.

Did you happen to notice?

I’d have sworn mine pointed counterclockwise of the #8 triangle but it’s been so long that I don’t remember.

It’s getting to where aftermarket parts are more like “kits” that you have to reassemble or fix before use.

looks to me thats for a 6cyl. as you can see on my dist with the dimple on the gear and the line on the shaft mine sits *here*

you mesh the gears, and in most cases once it plops in the rotor now faces the 8 cast into the dist. if i do it the way on the page 2 you provided id end up on the 6 thats also cast.

Thanks for the pictures, that’s how I remember mine being as well. I must have grabbed those manual pages from the 4.3 section.

It happens, cant tell ya how many times ive done similar.

My unproven suspicion is that one of the Communist Chinese factories making knockoff distributors sold by multiple retailers, has put the divot on the distributor driven gear 180 degrees "off" because their R&D (Receive and Duplicate) department screwed-up.
I cant see a reason to fully disprove this suspicion. Im sure the poor kid putting the gears on the assembly line missed it.
