Need new transfer case?

Hi guys, I just bought my first gmt400. I have a loud whine which i thought was my diff, checked all the fluids and my t case was low. Really low. It took pretty much 2 qts. Took it out and its better, but not good. Im guessing the previous owner smoked the transfer case. Any input on if it is toast? TIA
