I went to a shop yesterday to get an estimated price on putting a 5.3 and a t56 in my 98 c1500.

I was looking at a high output 5.3. http://www.crateenginedepot.com/53-LS-327327-High-Output-19165628-P10528C943.aspx.

The shop I was at said that they have a 5.3 that was taken out of a 2000 truck over 10 years ago with 3500 miles on it. It is a complete motor and he wants $1200. The cam and pistons for the motor I was looking are approximately 800 for the parts. Which would bump me up to $2000 + labor to install them.

Which motor should I get?

Is a warranty worth $1300+ to you? If you rebuild the 10 year old engine you will have a new engine without warranty. Will you do the work? How confident in that are you? What will labor cost to rebuild the 10 year old engine?

I would get a new before I paid that much for one that had been sitting that long. Even though is low miles it probably needs a rebuild. I would take a 100k mile pull out before that one...

I would attempt to do the work myself, but I don't have the time or the space to do it.

DRAGGIN95 - that would be real nice, but I don't have that kind of money.

I was leaning toward the used motor, but now I am about 90% on buying the new motor. I found a guy who has a 5.3 with 50,000 miles on it that he is going swap for a 6.0. He said he will sell me the intake, water pump and all the accessories (including ac compressor) for $120. I can bolt all that up to the motor from the link above and have someone drop it in for me.

Thanks for your advice/opinions.

I understand but you are going to spend $3383 on a 5.3 vs $3400 on a 408 add a few hundred dollars for some decent heads and all of the same accessories and intake will fit both engine just the same.

Sounds a solid suggestion Sir. I would definitely consider doing this myself. In my 97 C1500 ECSB.
