Can you do an injector balance test? It's possible you have an injector(s) that is(are) stuck open, flooding the cylinder and preventing it from firing? Wouldn't that case destroy the catalytic converter if it was ran like that for extended time?

I can't imagine how that stuff would get into the engine though. It's on the exhaust side of the system.

I have a 1994 tbi 5.7 and my distributor was "slightly off", i was driving down the highway one day and the truck just died, then had the issue you're describing, turned out to be a bad rotor and Ignition Control Module got fried (common issue from the reading I've done), once I replaced those two and got new bolts from the hardware store to hold everything in place securely, (bolts that hold the top of the distributor cap were not 100% tight allowing just a little play and likely were the source of my problems) the truck started right up and ran just fine.

Big Update!

I swapped the PCM from my ´98 to the ´99 and the beast fires right up!!!
It runs for seconds and then the passlock shuts it down. At least the security light flashes and I got a code with my Tech2.

BUT it runs! I'm so happy that it is somehow alive!

So I'll check ebay for a "new", VATs free, tuned PCM! :)

Will post updates on the PCM once it arrives.

Thank you guys for your help and support so far.

Before spending $ you might verify the '99 wont start on the '98 PCM.

I recently got a new, tuned, vats free pcm and it works.

So, to complete the list mentioned earlier...
An engine needs
-Air
-Free exhaust
-Gas
-Sparks at the right time
And a working pcm!

If anyone has trouble firing up an engine, just swap the pcm and try that first.
