I also think that the 8.1s got a 5 speed allison

Pretty sure the 8.1L Avalanche 2500s got the 4L80E. I don't think the Allison was a requirement with those like it was with the 8.1L full size GMT800 trucks.

Missed several on the way home; every little town has a few OBS trucks and often a square body too. Just in Shiner I missed a two door, an RCSB that looked Sharp, and another crew cab! At highway speeds it's practically impossible to get a clear shot. But the best thing we saw on the trip truckwise was between Hallettsville and Sublime, a yard that might be semi defunct. But dayum they got the trucks! I'll post more pics when I get some more research done, but this looks like a place to find some goodies and spend some $$$.

you are half right wikipedia shows that the 2500s came with the 4l85e

Model car club meeting was tonight, my friend Ed's '94 in the lot. I wanted to get Jim L's truck too but he had already left.
I'm seriously considering having a "GMT400/OBS parking" row at our club show/contest/swap meet the end of July. We have 3 members besides me who have them, so if I brought Rawhide and The Burb, that'd be 5 trucks.... several other members have newer Chevy trucks and my buddy Bernard used to have an '89 Sportside.
