As I recall, the stick shift and th400 used a 32 spline output shaft and the 700R4 used a 27 spline.

This is correct, I am assuming his 88 has a 700r4. That bein the case, if he had a 32 spline input for his transfer case, he could swap it out for the 27 spline he has and use the transfer case that is already in the truck. This is also assuming his transmission has a 6 bolt transfer case adapter on it to get the bolt pattern right.

I will have the flywheel, clutch, etc from my 350/SM465 available in a few weeks. I need an externally balanced flywheel for my 383 crate motor that's going in.

If anything I would try to find a ford np205 if you could mate it to the sm465 or run a chevy axle so you can run the 205 since it is one of the best t-cases you can get

205 or a rockwell case are the strongest gm cases as long as there is fluid in em. you have options all depends on axle if you want to stick with drivers drop then find a stock tcase with the right splines, both the 27 and 32 were offered in 400s one was manual and one automatic. as for the hydraulics follow what ryan stated, only thing id be unsure of is which adapter.spacer to use, theres three different ones in know. or find a ford 205 that was suggested.

In my truck I bought an sm465 for temporary use.. My truck was a factory nv3500 and it died so I bought the sm465 cheap to keep it running and it was a direct swap to my driver side drop np241 same with the nv4500 I had built if your t case is 32 spline input shaft buy a late model sm465 and its a direct swap
