ABS lamp

Just a quick question, on my 96 K2500 is the ABS lamp supposed to light up when the key is turned to the on position like the rest of the dash lamps? If it should come on obviously the first thing I'll check is the lamp itself but is there any other reasons that I may not know about? I ask all of this cause I found out the hard way my ABS is non functional, it was either rear end a car or kiss the guard rail..... I took the latter and was still able to drive it home. So my truck did what they all do and just locked up the rears. The thing is there was no abs lamp and the abs motor did not function, I'll be on the lookout for a good used unit or I'll see if mine just needs to be re soldered.
