I changed the trans to a 7ooR4, will the sensor work with that? And the convertor box will solve my speedo issue? are there instructions for hooking up the sensors and the tach? I know it' s a lot of questions, but I'm not a real mechanic, just a decent parts-changer who can follow directions...

I have a 39 Chevy 2 door with a 454 and th400 trans. When I upgraded the gauges a few years age in install the GPS autometer speedo and it works great. I painted the GPS antenna the same color as the car and it's hardly noticeable, mounted on the cowl between the hood and windshield. On the picture you can just see it on the cowl, looks like a little bump, close to the hood.

Does your 700r4 have a mechanical or electric speedometer output? Some did, some didn't.

As for instructions, the individual autometer gauge instruction sheets will be included for each gauge. I can do the same with the dakota digital box.

Yeah 88+ has the VSS reluctor, earlier years have the gear drive but, you can change them out by dropping the tail housing and sliding off the seal tube and the gear (friction fit), just pay attention to their exact position in relation to the oil return holes in the shaft. We did mine in about 1/2 hour.

Basically, if he has a vss 700, itll send the signal direct to the dakota digital box. Otherwise if it's a mechanical 700, itll need the screw in hall effect sensor to send that signal to the dakota box.

Thanks for input everyone, but I'm thinking I must have the VSS. If it was the cable drive , wouldn't I be able to change the plasiic gears and fix the stock speedo error? I'll check for sure when I get home, but I don't think I have the cable.
