White smoke? Lots of it? Like you're making clouds? That's usually coolant burning, which would be a bad head gasket. Have you looked at your oil for coolant?
I don't have much experience with OBD1 vehicles, but if you could get a OBD1 capable scanner and see what the O2 sensor is doing, that would be fantastic. It could be running rich due to a false lean, being reported by the O2. The computer dumps lots of fuel into the engine trying to correct the false lean and you end up running very rich. That's what my OBD2 Volvo was doing.
