Some processes may not even be .020 deep.
In the aluminum extrusion business, we had a nitrider in each plant. After correcting the dies, we'd nitride them. We were happy with a .006" shell after 6 hours (yep ~.001"/Hr). This was on H13 alloy. You could probably get by with that on a crank after grinding.
