1998 K1500 CD player not working

This a single CD player, sits below the climate control. It just decided to not work one day. Don't use it much but I like for it to behave when I want to. Push eject and it does nothing except showing err after pushing it several times. Then I didn't drive it for a while the battery was low. I disconnected the cables and cleaned em, charged battery and started truck and CD player worked until I went to FM and tried to go back to CD and it was back to not working. I had to disconnect the battery again for something and it seems to work after disconnecting the battery. Anybody got an idea I could try. I've never taken it to the dealer for any kind of software update. Got 347K on it. Could it be a SW glitch? Thanks.

I really, really doubt it. I could be wrong but I don't think the radios in these trucks even had the ability to connect to anything that would do a software update.

I'm about to take the working CD player out of my 99 suburban, separate component, as soon as I can find a pocket to fill the space
