1995 gmc sierra manual hvac swap?

My hvac system has been acting up and i had the idea that maybe i could convert it to a more reliable cable driven system. I believe my controller has went out and it is a one year only part for the 1995 amd sells for 250 bucks, this is not ideal during winter, so i was wondering if anyone had done this before. Thanks. Also wondering if i could make a vortec controller work because i just yanked one from a scrap yard while i was hauling in my parts truck today (i would have used the controller from that one but it blew apart during removal)
