1993 5.7L V8 Engine codes don't latch - why??

I get a little spitting/sputtering and the check engine icon turns on then goes out, so I can't read a code in order to troubleshoot. Any ideas about why the code doesn't latch in? Is it such a momentary problem that it doesn't trigger the latch or ?

The light may go out but, the PCM will store the code(s) for somewhere ~30 - 40 key cycles or if you disconnect the battery.
