    L31 Vortec 5.7 Heads/Cam advice for my 1999 K2500 Suburban

Sorry for the delay in answering, my life has been a bit hectic lately. Well, I still have the truck. It still has a 350 and a 4L80 that needs a rebuild. I bought a 2010 Chevy Colorado with a 3.7L inline-5 (yeah.. I know) with super low miles from an insurance auction, and retired my daily...

    Trakmotive extended travel CV Axles

I've never seen them in real life but they seem like a cool idea. Napa sells what I can only imagine are the exact same axles rebranded too (but they're never in stock around here). Might be worth checking out, napa used to have great warranties on wear parts (like hub bearings & CV axles)...

    2wd frame vs 4wd frame?

Take a look at some SAS threads here and on Pirate4x4, I think Offroad Design has some good pics on their website showing how to put their SAS kit on a 4x2. If I recall correctly, the only difference is that in the last two inches or so, the 4x2 frame has a rounded blunt end to it, while the 4x4...

    Lower Control Arms Help

Looks great. I see your fancy upper control arm. Are you cranked quite a bit? Did you drop the front diff down a bit? Angles look fine. I want to do the same thing to mine witj a 2003+ full soze van spindle since the mounting point for the upper ball joint is about 1.5" higher, should allow for...

    Lower Control Arms Help

The lower control arm bushings I use for my '99 8-lug 2500 with forged lowers were these 2: AC DELCO 45G9213 GM 89033036 AC DELCO 45G11076 GM 88996751 They had "Made In Mexico" moulded in the same place as the originals that came out.

FYI you'll probably want a tune if you delete EGR.

    AFM DELETE PROBLEMS

Did anything have AFM in 2005? I thought that was an '07+ thing? AFM in a 2005 sounds like the first problem..

    Lower Control Arms Help

The parts houses show different part numbers for the stamped vs forged arms. I don't have any stamped arms available to tell what the difference is.

    Lower Control Arms Help

Are the Hummer H2 bushings somehow different from (superior to?) the bushings used on other 3/4 ton fully forged lower control arms? Or are they just a convenient vehicle to look up for the correct part? (I'm assuming H2's never had the stamped arms?) Curious for myself here, but I think it'd...

    Lower Control Arms Help

C1500 means 2 wheel drive. Those have a pad for a coil spring that goes where the front axle would go, and they don't have a socket for the torsion bar.

    Lower Control Arms Help

I have a '99 K2500 all forged LCA on my bench right now. I can provide measurements if that would help.

96 Suburban ABS Module - unfixable and unsure what to do

I don't know if they actually check ABS functionality on 90's GM products in Cali through the data link connector (OBDII port). I kind of doubt it because it would probably cost them a fair bit to be able to. The good thing about the Vortec 96-00 trucks is that the ABS light is fed directly...

Which oil pan for Dart SHP 1-piece seal block?

Hey guys, Hypothetical question. If I already owned a 3.75" stroke crank for a 1-piece rear seal engine (86+) and I had the chance to buy a Dart SHP 1-piece rear seal block - do you guys know what oil pan would work for a K2500 that previously had a Vortec engine? This may be a stupid question...

    Can they turn any better?

There were also changes to the control arms that enabled a tighter turning radius (at least for the 2500 series). Initially these trucks had stamped steel lower control arms that were welded together. Sometime around 97 they switched to forged ones that allow the knuckles to turn more before...

no cheap lockers for 6 lug open diff?

I don't have access to a parts breakdown page at the moment, but I can tell you that if I go on Rockauto and search for a 1996 Cadillac Fleetwood with a 5.7 V8, under Drivetrain, Differential Cover - they list the GM OEM 9.5sf cover (after all the normal 10-bolt 8.5 covers) as a possible...

no cheap lockers for 6 lug open diff?

You were definitely right that full-size cars could be had with the "truck" (8.5") 10-bolt, but I once saw with my own eyes a GM car chassis (body was gone) with a 5-lug 9.5" 14sf. I assumed that was what you meant (didn't realize you missed 14bsf until after). I bet you there are ZERO of those...

no cheap lockers for 6 lug open diff?

Don't half ton guys want to pay big money for 6-lug 14bsf 9.5" rears? Maybe you could buy whatever with a G80 (8-lug 14ff probably cheap, on a truck you barely drive having to carry two different spare tires doesn't seem too bad) and sell your rear to break even? I'm pretty sure b454rat is...

    400 cracked block?

If you're really on a short budget and you're clearly capable of swapping a short block - could you put new rod and main bearings in the second motor you got from the wrecker? Probably just worn out. Probably the cheapest way to get back on the road.

Quick Disconnect Fitting on Heater Inlet Hose

Good point. Sorry I have a van with a 5/8" heater core supply hose. Got it mixed up with my GMT400 Suburban. My '86 GM truck also has a 3/4" heater supply hose. The water crossover is 5/8".

Quick Disconnect Fitting on Heater Inlet Hose

GM also made flow restricted NPT to 5/8" hose barb connectors. I have one on the thermostat bypass hose on my 1986 6.2L diesel but I imagine the big block gas engines are the same. It has maybe a 3/8" hole to let water through it. Much smaller than the 9/16" or so diamater hole in the brass one...

    Vortec 5.7l oil consumption.

My sister has a 2012 Malibu with a 2.4L ecotec 4 cylinder and we use Mobil 1 5w30 and change it every 3000 miles because that engine makes it's oil dark fast. When it used to get conventional oil, the oil would coke up in the passages for the variable cam timing and plug up the filter screens on...

    built 406 or mild 350 w/whipple

LS are sweet car engines. I've heard that with a 4" stroke crank (5.3L -> 383, 6.0L -> ~408?) They can make good torque. I haven't driven one of those. Worth nothing is that the torque rating on a 6.0L is at 4200 RPM. A 350 vortec is rated at 2800 RPM. And the difference is 360 LB-Ft vs 330...

    P0430 ?

My friend has an '01 S10 4.3 V6 (basically the 6-cylinder version of the 350 Vortec). He has no cats and it has never thrown a check engine over it. I have no idea why. Maybe the sensor is just that dirty. They make a plug-in thing that plugs into the rear O2 sensor plug on the harness and sends...

What do I need to complete this swap?

If you want to use your vortec heads you can use a manifold intended to put a carb onto a vortec engine (these can be found on some boats) and then get an adapter to put your TBI onto the carb flange. That'll be cheaper than the tbi-to-vortec GM piece. But won't support EGR (not sure if that...

Flex fuel L31 using the 0411

Thanks, this is what I thought. Aren't they like $175 for the reluctor? At one point they were around $99, that would have been an alright price.
