GMT800 exhaust on a GMT400

Is it possible to mount a GMT800 exhaust onto a GMT400? The reason I ask is I have noticed that stainless steel exhausts for GMT800's are quite a bit cheaper. I have a 1994 GMC K1500 extended cab with the 6 lug 14 bolt.

Perhaps a moderator will move this thread to the Exhaust sub-forum.

Anything can be installed on anything else with enough welding/fabricating/cutting/refitting.

If you're in an area that has emissions testing, you'll need the same number of catalytic converters, in the same locations as the truck was born with.

I've wondered the same, since I was seeing stock exhausts from newer trucks at auction for awhile. I'd assume it would not be a bolt in. Headpipes and hangers would likely be out of position, and then you've got the difference in cross-members on the frame and clearance issues. A newer platforms exhaust would likely need to be seen as a parts source that would need to be paired with your labor and a welder.

I bought a car back exhaust off a 19 or 20 truck. Had the single in/out muffler which didn’t I care about but more the duals going out the back. Doesn’t come close to going in. Pipe had the be shortened on this side, lengthened on the other, etc. Their cheaper because there still out there, think they ran for longer than our trucks did….

Not even close. Our trucks went from 88 to 98, which is 11 years. That's not counting the the 8-lugs that went until 2000. The only platform produced longer than our trucks were the Squarebodies. 1973-1987 (15 model years!), not including the SUVs and crew cabs.

Actually the G-vans (71-96) ran longer and the current Express vans even longer than those. Express platform has run since 1996 and still being made.

If I were to wager a guess, the tailpipe over axle section ought to be close enough and you could probably get within a foot or 2 of the cats. But you'd be on your own with the mounts. If you're the kinda guy who has to pay for anything beyond bolt in and go, you may not be dollars ahead when it's all said and done.

Thanks for the replies. I was curious if someone had tried it. There are a bunch of stainless catback exhausts on eBay for the GMT800 for around $200. The hangers are universal. They just go wherever you want them to go by clamping on via horseshoe clamps. Main thing I wanted to know was how far the center offset of the front pipe that connects to the y-pipe/cats is. Obviously the closer the two line up the easier it would be to connect them. Since my truck is over 26 years old it only has to pass a safety inspection here in NY.
