I only drive my 1996 burb 2500 on the weekends. I had a weird day with the brakes today.

First the pedal got mushy but didn't cause much drama. Now I can push the brakes to the floor and the brake warning light kicks on. It always stopped but not as quick as I'd like as I limped it home.

PS fluid was low, I topped it off. No change. I just swapped shocks and the front pads and calipers look fine.

What should I be checking out? My brake experience is swapping pads and rotors.

Thanks

Do you have hydroboost brakes? I believe only the 7.4 and diesels 2500 got the hydroboost. My 3500 truck had pinhole leaks on the hydroboost on 2 hoses going from the power steering pump to brake booster/gearbox. Hydroboost valves are known to leak, so look at that also.

I do have hydroboost. It seems like I may have misunderstood some posts I read about how the power steering and brake booster work together.

The rear chamber of the the master cylinder was low. I topped it off and it felt better for a bit but got bad quickly. No obvious leaks, but the fluid would disappear from the rear chamber. I figured the master cylinder was toast or I had a leak that I was not seeing.

I took it in and $400 later I have a new master cylinder and brakes that work.

I need to remember to check on more often when I post questions. Thanks for all your input!

Just for S&G pull back the insulation where the brake pedal push rod goes through the fire wall under the dash and see it is wet. you might have a soggy floor under the carpet.
