That sir, was a rope, not a chain.

Yes, and do you think the end result would be any different?

I recall a gentleman was killed I think 2 years ago out in Moab or BFE. He was pulling someone and the tow point on teh stuck rig snapped orr, the D ring and bumper part became a projectile and hit him square in the back of the head and killed him.

There is lots of safety precautions that should be taken when towing, winching, or extracting a vehicle.

Also.... Unless you have one of those magical stretchy ropes... Dont gun it and hope for the best from one end of the chain to the other. Thats just asking for something to break/someone to get hurt.

No matter WHAT you are using to recover a stuck vehicle, STAY OUT OF THE WAY. The safest place is in your vehicle..or way out of the range of the equipment your using.. I've seen cables, chains, ropes, straps, they all snap under enough load. I've seen 1/2" choker cables snap like nothing.. the only reason it didn't go through the windshield was because it frayed out (literally WIPED the windshield out, like 90% of it spidered and caved in) Crazy ****.

In that scenario, yes, it would have been different. A chain of similar dimensions as that rope would have been heavier and the bumper would not have flown like it did, it would have weighed it down more.
Plus, I was always told to pull from the frame, not the bumper.

I always used chain but i got chains from semis, also depending on how hard you gotta pull the person depends on whether to pull from front or back

im sorry but i disagree with this,,, the tension on the chain no matter how heavy is going to result in a similar action,,, with my family being in the auto salvage and towing business ive first hand watched chains, cables, and straps failing... anytime ive ever pulled using anything ive always thrown a towel or a shirt over the middle of the chain to take the recoil out of it if it broke and its worked plenty of times,,, ive witnessed a chain smashing back window out of truck because of failure.. get on youtube and watch some videos..

in that video the recoil of that strap wouldve been no different from the recoil of a chain in the same situation...

just my 2 cents

This, no matter what your using to pull putting another strap, piece of chain even a floor mat over it in the middle to weight it down is always a good idea...
