Sharpe IMO FWIW just run the ramjet 395 cam ...you will make almost just as much power with less compression with iron heads vs the zz4 aluminum head setup at 10:1 . You will have a ton of vacuum , no ac bogging issues , and lets face it 400 ft lbs is no slouch since you mentioned occasional towing . 364 hp 412 torque per Hot rods dyno test.

sounds good thank you, just corrected the stats for both cams, is there any way to get a little more lope out of the 395 cam? possibly in the tune or with 1.7 rockers? is I sound like a newb don't be shy.

much later ill bore to a 383-
mercruiser manifold
small port vortecs
Lloyd Elliot cam

any thoughts on anything let me know, thanks for whatever knowledge you choose to share

Doesn't sound like anything that long tubes and no cats cant fix...

by the way for exhaust I'm more then likely going long tubes but how is edelbrocks T.E.S?

Also what are the thought of the sp350 cam?
  • Camshaft Lift: .473" intake / .473" exhaust
  • Camshaft Duration (@.050 in.): 215° intake / 223° exhaust

Back in the early 70's I built a hot 327 & used all of the top line parts according to all of the hot rod type magazines. I failed to take into account that their motors were for WOT & what I needed was street range RPM parts. The Camaro was a dog off of the line and started to become a little better at around 35 mph. Somewhere around 55 to 75 mph it began working together fairly well, from 75 and up it ran like a scalded ape. I would suggest that you pay attention to the lower RPM ranges, I have a 95 K2500 with 4L80 & 4:10; it is rare for me to run over 3000 RPM.

All the cams I'm looking at are from idle-5500(maybe 6000), from what I can tell the differences are subtle maybe in idle characteristics

Ballpark cams ....Its really hard to find dyno numbers for more conservative milder builds . Most magazines are building w.o.t. monsters that sell magazines ......

Here are two examples using the same smallish camshaft but Vortec vs Dart S/r torquer heads .

Comp cam XE256H-10 256° / 268° .447" / .454" 110

9.7:1 355, Vortec heads, summit stage-1 intake 700 cfm Holley 324hp@5700 379ft-lb@3600.

9.25:1 356 Dart s/r heads Holley, Edelbrock Performer ,750 cfm holley 330 HP @ 4700 411 ft*lbs @ 3600 RPM

Bore to 383? Surely you mean stroke.

yes 383 stroker I know you can't make a 383 with bore alone the most that could be hoped for on a stock block with bore alone would be 360 cubic inches

My 395 idle aounds really meaty, kinda like it's thinking about loping but it won't. How aggressive of an exhaust do you have OP? Mine has long tubes, no cats, dual 2.5 into single 3" with a Magnaflow muffler. Sounds really good when it's in gear with the parking brake set and I'm hooking up the trailer. Lots of low end, mid range, and "top end" (show's over by 5k). More of what the motor did stock basically. It has a 106 ICL like stock too, that was the 1 thing not mentioned in the cam specs provided earlier. I also did 1.6s so lift is more in the .460/.480 range for me but I ended up drilling out the pushrod holes for that. Kept stock springs though, turns out the Ramjet used the same as these motors.
