If the filter was that plugged...don't be surprised if the fuel pump is wounded from pushing maximum pressure the whole time the filter was restricting flow.

Hard to say how that affected the pump. Could last a long time yet. Might fail fairly soon. No knowing.

Are the TBI pumps internally regulated? If so, a plugged filter wouldn't hurt it. The internet says the EP381s are internally regulated and can be run in a deadhead configuration.

Still, the TBI pumps are barely adequate. If you need to replace it, replace it with a Vortec EP381. It's plug and play.

If the EP381 does have an internal regulator he doesn't need it. His TB has the regulator built in. It would be a benefit to use the vortec that is not regulated if he needs the power for,,,,,,,,,,whatever!

Just did a search on this forum and didn't see any mention of that pump having an internal regulator and apparently it is being used as an upgrade.
