I have a 92 single can stepside 4.3 v6 with 176xxx miles. The truck has ran great iv drove it from OkC to california with no issues an have done a few 800 mile round trips with it. So far so good. But in the the last year Iv only been driving her no more then 13 miles a day. I now have a new job and need this truck to be as close to 100% reliable as possible. Iv noticed it's had a bit of a power loss. Long story short any experience having the V-6 rebuilt or replacing it in your opinion what's the better option for longevity and daily use? How would I determine if this motor is ready to go on me or if it's still got years left and it would a auto mechanic be able to tell me.Any input is welcome thanks guys.

Tbi v8 350. Just a running used one and call it a day. I wouldn't waste on rebuilding a v6, but that's just me. And I'm a current v6 owner.

A used oil analysis can be pretty informative when it comes to 'internal' injuries in an engine. It will spell out what wear metals are in the oil, and at what concentrations.

You may be suffering from a myriad of issues if the power is down. A full compression check and an oil analysis is a good start. Check for codes. How's the exhaust?

Pesonally I would do a compression test on it and a fuel pressure drop test to see if it's getting proper flow. If you do a V8 swap your probably want to make sure you at least have a 4l60 trans. It will also take a wiring harness and an ecm wich all add up quick for cost. With either option ( rebuild it or a swap) make sure it has a roller camshaft instead of a flat tappit cam. It makes it more efficient and will hold up to wear at leat twice as long.

I've seen those engines with close to 400k IMO warranty is a big deal to me cost more up front but no worries down the road
