No rubbing but noticeable mpg loss with 3.42 gears as expected
i'm glad you posted that......thanks
when i first got my truck it was in need of tires.....and i wanted 285's......i also have 3.42's.......i chose to stay at the stock(for my truck) size of 265 because of the other issues related to the "upgrade".......this ain't my first rodeo and i know know, even at the marginal increase of diameter, it changes your overall gearing and will require you to use more "go pedal" to get her moving.
a lot of folks say they don't notice a difference in mileage, but i also know it depends on where and how you drive the truck.
the speedometer will also be off calibration by the same percentage as the size difference.
33's and 3.42 is basically the same as 31's and 3.08 gearing......33/4.10=35/4.56=31/3.73....those are good combos in my opinion for trucks that see use, they're sensible gearing combos........if you plan on towing, think about what you need v. what you want.
the "stock" towing package on a 1/2 ton 4x4 is usually 3.73's and a 31" tire.....that's a general statement, but is pretty true going back into the 1970's.
trucks ordered from the factory for mostly highway driving were ordered with the 3.08's....we just called em highway gears......and you WILL notice a small difference in off-road torque....
how perceivable is difference?
......it's up to the driver and their experience
Firestone 265/75-16 then Goodyear 265/70-17

not only is there a performance difference, but there's a considerable cost difference.....depending on the size.....if you go to a 285, it is HIGHLY recommended to have the same size spare tire.....depending on your situation. i always have 5 of the same tires
