I have a 3.8L Ecotec and the ignition coils have a round plastic disc disk underneath them that two popped out I've never seen this before and I'm wondering if it some sought of relief mechanism that pops out if the coil swells?

Given that coils are just steel plates and wire, I don't see any reason to provide a relief for anything. If there's any swelling it would have to be corrosion. Unless maybe they're oil filled? If they still work, I'd just run'm. Otherwise replace them, I guess.
