I found a getrag 5spd from a 1990chevy k1500 5.7 4x4. is this transmission a good transmission? I would be swapping from a 700r4 to this if I get it

The Getrag 5LM60 and HM290 5-speeds had bearing issues prior to the NV3500 in 1993. I would stick with a NV3500 from 93/94.
I believe 95+ you run into a change between slave cylinders being external and swapping to internal.

For strength, reliability, and rebuild "ease" I would suggest nothing but the NV4500. Earlier years (before 95/96?) had a "Bull Low" 1st Gear with like a 6.23:1 ratio. It is a useless gear for daily driving but unreal in towing/4x4ing applications.

After the 95/96 they went with a better 1st gear ratio, like 5.64:1 (approximate) and they also changed to an internal slave cylinder.

since its coming from a parts truck, would I be able to swap in all of the other parts except the transmission and just put in a nv3500/4500?

Everything will bolt in and work the same. The only difference I've found is in the shifters. So grab the shifter with whatever trans you get. The older 5-speeds from 88-92 will work, but a lot of these transmissions failed with factory warranty still on them if I remember correctly
