ge"91" 5 speed manual behind v8 will it fit behind "89" v6

I have a 1989 GMT400 (4×4) with a 4.3 L v6 and the 5 speed all aluminum manual transmission went AWOL on me. I located a not like my old transmission out of a 91, full and size, are all I know about it. Everything is aluminum except the case of the transmission it self. I'm told that the new trans is probably a nv 3500 and I didn't get a bell housing for it. Does anybody know if this transmission will bolt up to a v6 ? And if so, do I need an adapter plate? Or have any thing modified?
God I love truck. Great gas mileage and as strong as an 350.
