Basically.... none.... the stock set up pulls air from the inner fender area.. a "cold air" intake 99% of the time pulls air from the engine bay which is hotter then from in behind the fender. Outside air(cooler then the engine bay) gets pushed into the fender area when driving.. you can, which ALOT of us have done.. is get one of the V6 style air tubes that go to the fender. It's a direct replacement from the big old box that is usually there....

sent from what use to be a great country...

Just put a high flow filter in the stock air box. None of the CAI will flow more air than you stock air box, and tubing will. All you need to do is swap the filter. I have a spectre in mine. That is all you need.

Oh and you can remove the box that says vortec on it and cap off the hole with a ***** can, or anything that will fit inside the hole to plug it up. This gives you a straighter line of air flow.

Volant. Volant still pulls air from the fender. I'm sure it flows a little better as well

I can't see how removing the "Vortec" box helps, but I removed mine anyway. I think it's there to eliminate some noise at certain rpms. Removing it makes for one less thing in the way when working on the truck. As for a cold air intake, if you do it, it will be for looks or noise, not performance.

Just one man's opinion.

Adding to my comment:

Whether or not the little increase in airflow (if any) is worth the price will be up to you

As someone who spent way too much money on a K&N FIPK...

Leave it alone. Nothing is going to give you any gains over what's there from the factory, mileage or power. As others have said, the factory intake draws cool air from the fender and flows plenty for these engines. Run a good OEM style paper filter and change it regularly. Personally I'm not a fan of the K&N and Spectre filters, they're all oiled gauze. While they flow better than your average paper filter, they're much worse at actually filtering anything. Plus if you over-oil when cleaning they have a tendency to seep oil into your intake tubing and foul up your MAF. Factory is the best option in this case.

If you really want to buy one just for the looks, go with a Volant. They're the only aftermarket design that draws air from the fender like they're supposed to. All the others just draw hot air straight out of the engine compartment.

EDIT - Also, the "Vortec" box that everyone's talking about on the 96+ trucks is just there to kill resonant frequencies in the intake and quiet things down. Removing it isn't going to significantly effect airflow one way or another, it'll just make your intake louder at certain RPMs.
