As of today, I resolved the problem and the truck is back on the road. I always try to post my solutions incase someone else searches out the problem, and comes across the thread. (too many times have I found a thread on a problem with no solution)

I ended up buying the slave cylinder for an 02 silverado (part # CS2330) which had a steel braided line with some length to it, and the replacement part for a 96 c1500 (part # 285-221)

this eliminated the need for a custom hydraulic hose, and if I move the truck on down the road the next guy wont have the trouble I ran into.

You're saying you used the hose from the '02 Silverado slave / line combo (p/n CS2330) but used the slave cylinder for a '96 (p/n 285-221)?

(just clarifying for the next guy)
