Hey guys! Iv got a 96 Tahoe 4x4 with a 4l60e that's shot. I found a 92 suburban 4x4 on graigslist with a good tranny. And I was wandering if it'd fit in my Tahoe??? How much extra work it'd be, ect...

No go. 92's have the 700r4 you need to find one from a 96 or 97 to be an identical replacement. 98 trans should work too off i remember right.....

Well Iv looked at it and it does have a 4l60e I belive they started using them in 92? But the 96 is the year they started using the removable bell housing. So I don't know if all of the frame mounts and electrical connections would match up.

92's should have a tv " kick down" cable. And the removable bell housing didn't start until 98 as far as i know.

Either way your best bet is a 96 or 97 trans.

Its not a problem off not fitting, its a problem that 92 is mechical controlled and 96 is computer controlled. All 700r4/ 4l60es will bolt up to these trucks, but only some will work correctly.

A 92 doesn't have a full 4L60e, they are 4l60's if they aren't 700R4's, which are basically the same. I guarantee you the transmission in that Burb is controlled by a throttle cable that goes up to the throttle body, while 4L60e's are computer controlled.

Oh my goodness.

Starting in 1993, GM began putting 4L60-E transmission in car and light duty truck applications. The 1992 Suburban uses a 700R4 transmission, which is mechanically controlled.
Starting in 1995/6, the 4L60E was upgraded electrically, with the ability to set codes in the PCM if any issues arose.

This is why if you own a 1988-1992 C/K truck, Suburban, S-10 or Tahoe, you have to use the 700R4, because 1993+ are not designed to run a mechanically controlled transmission.

Likewise, if you own a 1993-4 C/K truck, Suburban, S-10 or Tahoe, you have to use a 4L60E from a 1993/4 model, due to how the computer is designed to operate it. (Basically, it just controls the shift points, nothing else.)

If you own a 1995, you have to get a transmission out of another 1995, because it was an OBD 1.5 transition thing, and only that year will work.

If you own a 1996-1998, you must get a 4L60E out of a vehicle in that year range, due to the full computer integration. (Shift Points, Diagnostic info, etc. etc.)
