700r4 trans cooler lines

I must be cursed, retarded, or just suck at life. I can't get the fitting on the cooler line to screw into the tranny. Is there some miracle magic needed to perform this seemingly easy action. I had the same problem when I pulled the Trans to replace the flexplate(had to have a buddy work the magic of line fittings).

Does anyone else have this problem and any tips? Maybe taking off the crossmember would help with more access to the area?
