Stock 4L80E out of the mud is stronger than the Level Infinity built 4L60E.

With a TBI it is a matter of adding input speed signal wires, moving a couple of wires in the big round connector and swapping the chip to one for a 4L80E truck.

My stock L31 350 killed the stock 4L60E at 38K and a built 4L65E in 40K. Threw a stock 4L85E with a Transgo HD2 kit in its place.
I got into the 4l60e 4l80e debate with my hot rob shop owner. He actually said the 4l60e platform transmission that im having built is stronger than a stock 80. Hes running the same transmission on his square body LS swapped blazer with a blower and has not had a single issue. He could have easily sold me an 80

Every group seems to have a die hard 4L60 nut that swears up and down a 4L60 can be built stronger than an Allison. I see too many horror stories of built transmissions failing to buy into that.

Yea he was Adamant about it. He could have easily sold me an 80 and made more money due to the cost difference and the modifications needed to go along w the 80.

I have been inside Powerglide, 700r4, 4L60E, TH350, TH400, and 4L80Es. Give me the TH400 or 4L80E. Will never waste money trying to put perfume on the pig that is a 700r4/4L60E again.

Junkyard 4L80E with a Transgo HD2 kit far surpases anything ANY 700r4/4L60E can take in strength.

Friend of mine tows with a Duramax/4L85E. Trans had 80K on it when the engine was tuned to make ~400 hp and 800 tq. Trans had a HD2 kit put into it at the same time along with a +3qt deep pan. It has over 200K on it with ALOT of those miles dragging a loaded 34 ft toy hauler. I tuned it to defuel substantially during shifts but otherwise it puts the fuel to it.

My 4L60E was built & I've put over 6000kms towing over 6500lbs with it. I did blow the tranny pump first trip out, but I had the settings too high on my EZ-TCU controller.

I had Corvette Servos & a Beast Shell plus Z-Pac installed. Stock Torque Converter.. Fast EZ-TCU controller plus a larger tranny cooler installed.

I have had NO issues with the tranny...

My 4l60e on my 4.3 99 Silverado ECSB needs a rebuild at 255k miles. My buddy has basically the same truck with 385k miles, so these trannys can go a long way behind smaller engines.

I was thinking rebuilding, but all of the sudden a junkyard LS/4L80e sounds appealing. It's my daily driver that will soon get retired due to outgrowing family.

I also bought a 00 K3500 CCLB 5.7/4L80e weekend/beater truck last year. Now that I think about it, this transmission is much smoother than the 60e. My 60e has always been sort of harsh when shifting.

Finally, my nephew built a 91 ECSB with LQ4 nitrous, carb setup. I don't know all the details but he was talking almost 1000hp, I think. Anyways, he installed a TH400.

So I vote 4L80e.

They can also go a very short distance behind smaller engines... As evidenced by my red truck which killed two of them behind a 4.3L, one of them (which was done by a very reputable local builder) in less than 10K miles. Granted that was mostly my fault for removing TM in the tune but it still didn't inspire a lot of confidence in the 60E platform.

When the 60E in my Suburban goes, that truck will get an 80E as well.

Despite my idiocy of letting it go 40,000 miles without a flush, the 60 is still shifting good and solid. gonna get it flushed this week and install a bung in the pan for a temp sending unit. Always having very little money to spare I drive my vehicles gently so they do tend to last a while. My 65 Chevy Van has 91,000 miles on the 292 ci six and TH350 I installed in 1988 and both work perfectly. Can still tow with the 65 if necessary. I had the TH350 checked at 90,000 miles and they said it still looks new inside. It was built for RV towing so is strong. Had the van since 1970.
