Recently my 1998 v8 5.7L had 2 cylinder misfires caused by the cap rotting through. I had the cap and rotor replaced and the engine sounds and works just as good if not better. Just a day later my “service engine soon” light came back on and the code I ran said it came back from my catalytic converter (and yes it is in fact there haha). After some research on how it is supposed to behave, I’ve concluded that while driving (typically never hitting over 2200 RPMs and generally driving between 1500 and 2000 RPMs) that the cat works and behaves exactly as it is supposed to, however while idling, the data reported back showed that it was in bad shape (the data gathered was voltage going to both cats and the oxygen in both cats). The other test I performed was temperature reading both of them, the result for a properly functioning cat should show that the input should be 10%+ cooler than the output (Which should be 10%+ hotter than the input). On my truck the out put was the same if not cooler than the input while both idling and at driving RPMs.
*note: all testing was done while the truck was at operating temp (as it should be)

Had anyone had this same issue in their truck, if so what were you recommended/ or what did you do/ have done.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Operating with the misfire for an extended period of time likely fouled your cat. A new one would be the solution. Make sure your upstream O2 sensor is quickly oscillating below and above .5V before you replace it or you will foul the new one.

^^^ Yup. If the outlet isn't hotter than the inlet, the catalyst isn't working.

You can try various methods/chemicals to supposedly "clean" and "rejuvinate" the catalyst, but most likely you're going to have to replace it/them.

Only drove like that for a short 4 minute drive, followed by some testing which did not involve any driving, but revving, then was taken to a place to get repaired. All in all about 10-15 miles with the misfire.
