but checked for codes with a jumper and check engine flash showed nothing.
"Codes" can be useful. The data stream is essential.

You need access to the data stream so you can verify ALL the sensors, and the computer outputs. The answer to your driveability issue is almost certainly either fuel pressure or described by the data stream when the vehicle acts-up.

Check the fuel pressure.I do not know a way to check it but I would also check/clean or replace the Idle air control.

Also check the base gasket. If it has failed, that can drive you completely batty.
