I would try new speakers first. I put new speakers in and a modern radio in my '96. Then i went back to the stock radio since it has a fuller smoother sound to me. I also put a panel mounted aux jack and a switch tied into the radio to switch either the AUX or the FM tuner to go to the preamp. looks good, sounds good, and plays my mp3's.

Looks awesome, I've never liked the aftermarket radio location in these trucks. I may look into this in the future for my 92.

I have no experience with that particular unit, but I have played with some Retrosound units in other vehicles before. They're very nice. I wouldn't hesitate to try one if that look and location is what you're after.

Interesting idea, but IMHO they missed the mark.

Knobs are too old-school even for our trucks. They never had knobs, to my knowledge, so it looks odd. Color matching isn't the best, and they could have done more to match the buttons.

Also, while I'm not a fan of the usual aftermarket stereo location, this unit still begs the question of what to do with the now-useless tape player. At least the usual spot allows you to pull the unit and put a semi useful pocket in there.

The '95+ factory units had knobs like the Retrosound. Looks to me like they sort of combined the early and late dash looks. I agree it's definitely not an exact match, but I still think it looks better than 99% of the other aftermarket options available.

As far as the tape deck, this is what I would do if I were putting a Retrosound in an older dash style GMT400. Step one, buy a standard single DIN dash kit for an 88-94 like you were going to install a head unit in place of the factory tape deck. Like so:

https://www.amazon.com/Metra-99-3000G-Chevy-88-94-Gray/dp/B000281WD4

Step two, buy a universal single DIN storage pocket and stick it in there instead of a head unit. Like so:

https://www.amazon.com/DKMUS-Universal-Mitsubishi-Storage-Installation/dp/B00RIY229S

Just my two cents.

I had exactly what you described inn my 1994 Burb for 4/5 years with a JVC unit and no problems. As far as reaching for knobs the remote did everything I needed it to. That unit also had Hands Free answering for my phone. I'm in the process now of doing the same for my 1992 Burb.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! I've already replaced the speakers and I'm using a bluetooth FM transmitter for hands-free phone calls and audio. It's not ideal and I don't like the single DIN in the factory cassette/EQ location look. Thus this looked like a better solution for me but didn't know anything about RetroSound.

I was actually describing the exact opposite, a single DIN storage pocket and a Retrosound head unit in the factory location. But close enough I guess.
