Auto trans are voodoo. When starting with a completely empty system, all seem to vary by at LEAST a half quart one way or the other even when "official" capacities are stated, and even when identically equipped
I'll add that on a 700R4 with a deep sump pan and no external cooler other than the one in the radiator, took almost 13 quarts. Like @alpinecrick said it depends on temp and what phase the moon is in (OK I added that part). I had to drive it around and top it off twice before I got it to the "full when hot" level.

I've was under the impression they were actually limited slip differentials, but this isn't the first time I've heard them referred to as a "posi". I usually just roll with it because it's not worth it to make the distinction, and the only thing I have to go on is the fact that my tires don't lose traction on either side when taking a tight turn, so there must be some slip. Additionally, LSD fluid is what came up when I changed mine out.

We make the distinction because the locking differential used in GMT400's is the Eaton Gov-Loc and it uses plain gear oil, no posi additive, and using posi additive can cause problems with proper operation of the Gov-Loc unit. It's a mistake many make. :D

Right, but people should just in general know the difference between an LSD and a locker if they're doing their own work on their vehicles. Of course "should" doesn't mean it always happens lol

I will add some info in case anyone needs help on a quick search:

1996 k2500 7.4 4x4 ext cab

Oil Change: 7.5 quarts with oil filter. 5w-30 syn is what i use- cheapest on amazon 5 qt. and have been using castrol or amazon brand, high millage. I pre-fil filter as much as possible (4x4 so filter at angle) and add 7 quarts to motor. Drive around block and come home and add some if needed when warm. 7.5 overall seems to be right every time.

All TEMPS....5W-30 SAE 5W-30 is preferred.
Above 0 F .10W-30
CAPACITIES: With filter 7 quarts After refill check oil level.

4l80-e transmission: CAPACITIES: 4 speed 4L80-E Total Fill 13.5 quarts

Transfer case: varies and I can not remember which one I have!

Rear 14 bolf FF axle: I have a detroit tru trac and you do not want to use syn according to manufacturer. You can use a syn lube with no friction mod. but need to change out RTV on axles to GM gasket P/N 327739.

Lubrication Specifications
Detroit Truetrac
High quality mineral or synthetic gear lubes are
required for use in Detroit Truetrac differentials.
Regardless of the lube type, always use a GL5 rated
lube with the least amount of friction modifier.

You guys are really flaming me for trying to help out lol. Regular Car Reviews said it best, "posi" has become a term everybody uses for a LSD. Everyone knows what it means, even if it was specific to Chevys "positraction" back in the day

Problem is that it's not a posi. It's a locker. If you call it a posi, it's very likely that you will influence others' opinions of it too and they'll end up with the wrong lube. There's specifically a GM TSB that says to NOT use posi additive in the Eaton Gov-Loc, and describes the problems that can occur if you do.

It's a question that gets asked over and over on forums all around the web - so clearly there is a large degree of confusion, and calling the unit something that it isn't, paired with people arguing about correct lube types, ain't helping :D

It's not about you trying to help out, it's that you asked for somebody else to write up all the possible fluid capacities of all the different options for a series of tricks that extend over 12 years and several different variations. Information that could be readily found, and over the past several years this site has been up, has never been requested. If you had offered to do it after requesting where to find it, you may have been met with different results, but as it stands, it sounds as if you respect our time less than your own.

Words of wisdom from a man who has clearly drained all the juice only to find the fill plug is stuck. :D

Richard

Or learns from the mistakes of others....

I will admit to forgetting to fit the drain plug on a motorcycle gearbox before refilling it and wondering why my boot has turned brown.
