The factory style mini starters don't seem to need hear shields.
I got the reduction gear style (I think that's what you're referring to here). And I've never had an issue *knocks on wood*. No heat shield, live in DFW area, and I'm currently on road trip from there to an Francisco and back. In retrospect, I should have waited till I was back to say I haven't had an issue...

My truck is a 1990 TBI. "When" the starter turns the engine it always starts. When it didn't start the starter was dead as a doornail. A/C compressor engaged, heater fan ran, lights worked. Only the starter did not work. So far never an issue with a cold start. Hot, yes.

It has to be an issue with the starter/solenoid or associated wiring/grounds which could include battery cables all the way back to the ignition switch.

I'll investigate this weekend.

Thanks for all the tips and hints. I HATE tracking down an intermittent problem!

Well, my starter went dead again today AFTER I got home. About 10 minutes after I was home needed to make a quick run. No starter. After it set for another 10 to 15 minutes the starter worked just fine. At this point I'm 99% sure it is a heat related issue with the starter solenoid.

Can be worn starter contacts. Whack the starter with a hammer if it acts dead. Clean the lugs at the starter connections. The P/N switch is mounted on the side of the trans on later models. That left me stranded in a snowstorm in Pittsburgh once. lol

The factory didn't put them on (for weight reduction, most likely) but that doesn't mean it doesn't need one in hot climates.....
And I will vouch for the effectiveness of the hammer smack. Old R2500 Burb used to do that. Never in a snowstorm cause I live in Houston, but plenty of times at gas stations or grocery stores....Finally dad had me pull the starter and he rebuilt it. Brushes were shot IIRC, but he put a new drive and solenoid on it too. Worked great for the rest of the time we drove it. Basically the smack jiggles whatever is loose in the starter motor and that's what makes it work. And it lets you get some aggravation released from the truck dumping you in the first place LOL

Actually they did come with heat shields, but those that don't re-install them don't seem to have problems. My original heat shield doesn't fit the new Korean AC Delco starter that I bought. I may have been able to make it fit with some trimming, but I had already spent more time that I should have on the project. It's been over a year, and it's fine. Someotherguy in TX has also reported that it typically isn't a problem. The mini-starters work really well.

I found that Rockauto carries heatshields, and I bought one thinking it might be an updated design, and fit my starter, but it's the same as the original. Oh well.

Yes I have one in a box somewhere in the garage that the guy who replaced the flywheel on my Burb back in 2016 didn't put back on the starter when he reinstalled it. Said aw it don't need it....he knew HE wasn't going to be stuck in the truck if it didn't start when hot......
Once I find it, I'll put it in the place where the parts for this truck are stored. The next time the starter comes out, the heat shield goes back on. Before the flywheel got replaced, I got good at R&R on the starter. Did it like 10 times in a couple weeks. Blew the end frame off the last time it wouldn't start, so it went off to get fixed.
BTW if you are having this problem, the cap and or being carbonized and/ or cracked is what causes the ignition to fire 2 cylinders at once, causing backfiring and eventually killing the starter and flywheel.
