Getting back to the OP's radio issue there appear to be two schools of thought at work here. If the OP wants just to have a decent radio that sounds better than his one speaker then 4 x 6 replacement speakers will do the job unless a lot of bass is desired. Cheap 4 x 6's will sound so much better than his 26 year old Delco that he might not notice the bass. Yes it is a huge pain in the ass as the Silverado trim will have to be removed to replace the rear speakers and to do that you have to start at the bottom near the seat belts. That would be the cheapest option and if the OEM radio is working properly it should all be OK.

The other school of thought is the new head unit, amp, sub, the whole mobile jukebox bit. If that is the object then the extra power, door panel install, sub in the back approach is the way to go. I was personally just happy to get a working radio in the truck and the bluetooth phone is a real plus. Since mine is a work truck I could just change out the 4 x 6 OEM speakers (all were open and dead) and install the new head and go. I chose a Kenwood because it matched the one in my Van and I already know all the controls. The OEM radio was dead with a frozen display.

I have a full set of the Silverado high trim to install and don't look forward to it . Good luck to the OP dealing with his.

I did end up ordering the Polk plate speakers, they’ll get here Thursday hopefully.

Thank you. My goal is to just have a good sounding set of speakers. I figured that anything newer than what’s in the truck now would be lightyears better in every way, but I was willing to spend a little more on the sound system. I don’t plan on pushing these speakers, or my ears, to their limits so my ears will probably wimp out before the speakers do lol.

I plan on tearing apart what I can of the interior tonight. The dash ones will be super easy since the dash is already mostly gone anyway. Hopefully the back ones aren’t horrible, but they probably will be lol.

The back speakers (in the pillars) are not difficult, getting to them is the problem. Be careful removing the trim particularly over the back window. Those clips want to break off. I think there are some writeups about getting them out. the speakers themselves are easy enough. If they are like mine were they are open with no click when you put a battery to them. You do get a very nice and strong refrigerator magnet from them though. Please document what you do and it may encourage me to work on mine. If you are redoing the headliner, now is the time before that high trim package goes back in.

I managed to get the speakers out. I somehow was able to do it without pulling that top trim piece off, but there were some clips that didn’t come out with the piece under the window. I plan on cleaning all of the pieces and JB welding the clips back on as best I can and hitting some “while
I’m here” items while the interior is apart.

Thankfully my headliner is in near perfect condition.

And I’ll get some pictures up here and on my build thread once I get the chance and better lighting.

While ur in there, get some undercoating or equivalent and spray inside the speaker holes in the back, it'll help sound quality alot and kill some road noise. I'd hit everybit of bare metal u can that doesn't interfere with panels being put back. And was thinking if u have a standard cab the rear panels aren't SO bad lol. Good job getting it all out without breaking much, that's a feat all of its own!

That's how most of the ones in the salvage yards in Texas look... UV and heat destroyed them, made them more brittle than the tabs on later model HVAC controls.

Does anybody know where to get the trim pieces? Particularly the upper and lower rear trim pieces for a 97 extended cab? Previous owner already cracked them putting in cheap sears speakers (why bother replacing crap with more crap if you ask me, but maybe they were fried and he didn't have much $$?) And it's not terrible, but it's rather get new if I could find them. All out of stock at the GM sources that I know of.
