28 or 30? Rear outs are usually 32 I think, the front outs are a mix match of different sorts, some slip, some fixed, not usually 32 I thought, @88GMCtruck would know better maybe

I did a BUNCH of clicking, reading, cross referencing in the GM EPC this afternoon.

The 11k/12k truck is a 310/314 configuration which is Chassis Cab. Chassis cab was available as 2500-3500 C or K truck, main difference in chassis cab is 34" standardized framerail width compared to pickups.

From what I've researched, to get the higher GVWR you have to have a chassis cab truck with RPO F44 (Heavy Duty Chassis). To get the higher rating they used 4.56 gears with no G80, and the same 6-pack main spring but with a 3 leaf overload as opposed to the standard 1 leaf overload. And they used the stronger t-case in the case of 4wd trucks. That is all I can find. Frame is the same as other chassis cabs, rear axle and brakes are the same... etc. So it really came down to gearing and 2 extra overload springs with a stronger t-case in 4wd instances.

I've got some info for you guys. I towed a 1997 C3500 with the 11,000 pound package back in May. I have no idea where the truck is now but I was able to reap some info from it when I hauled it. I was shocked to see the 11,000# number since I thought all normal 1-ton trucks were 10k and the HD was 15k. This truck had a 6.5TD and a 4L80e. Also had tow hooks installed at the factory.

From what I could tell, it had a normal 14b dually axle and no special Dana 80 like the HD. I guess I never took a picture of the door tag with the GVWR (I remember it being 11k when I opened the door when I hauled it), but I did look the vin up with Compnine and provide screenshots below. No G80 package either.

If I was to guess, a 12,000GVWR truck probably has 4.56 gears and that's it, possibly being 4x4. But I've personally never seen one. Next time I see a C&C K3500 I'll check the door.

Some RPOs of importance on this C3500:

C7E - GVW RATING(11000 LBS) 11000 LB GVWR(C7E)
YD6 - SPRING,REAR(BASE EQUIPMENT) RR SPRING(YD6)
GT5 - AXLE,REAR,4.10 RATIO 4.10R(GT5)
F44 - CHASSIS EQUIPMENT,HEAVY DUTY HVY DUTY CHAS(F44)
F61 - SHAFT,REAR STABILIZER RR STAB SHF(F61)

Very good info! The RPOs you posted are what seemed to make it the higher GVWR, F44 is the primary qualifier as is C7E and YD6 for the heavier springs. From what I can tell, the rear stabilizer bar was not linked to the higher GVWR, it's just something Chassic Cab trucks had.

These trucks came from factory optioned for a Dana 70 HD as well just to throw another curve in
That is only in early (88-early 90s, can't look up the years here at work) 1-ton trucks. The Dana rear axle wasn't around in the later years and didn't appear to apply to anything 11k/12k when I looked in the EPC last night.

That makes sense, I've seen this body style with that 70HD in duallys but not in anything newer than say 90-91 or so.

Good call

That is one tidbit I forgot about that @gstubbz mentioned, the C3500 chassis cabs were the only 2wd GMT400s that got tow hooks factory installed as standard equipment.

dad also has a 98 C3500 Chassis cab that other than the 350, is speced identical to the 99, both are 5spd 2wd with 4.10s and have 11 foot bodies.

Also, the power ratings are different than pickups. the 350 in the 98 has less power, but reaches peak at a much lower RPM, and torque is either the same or higher.

On the 99 with the 6.5L, the chassis cab was 430/ lb ft no matter what. In the pickups, the auto was 430 and the 5spd was 410 or 420.

Also, the upper a-arm bushings are bigger than the 10K, found that out the hard way, ordered the wrong parts. :)

Rockauto.com does an awesome job covering both the C/K3500 chassis cabs and the C3500HD chassis cab.

@RedLeader289 They did have "HD's in GMT400, the C3500HD, made from 1991-2002 (with some 03 carryover models). Us HD owners claim the GMT400 HD is the only GM HD ever made where the HD means something and isnt a marketing gimmick. :)

C3500HDs all had 5 lug front and 10 lug rear, and all the rims were 10 lug.

According to brochures, only regular cab 2wd was available, there was 3 frame lengths, and 2 axle ratios (4.63 and 5.13)

In reality, there was 2 or 3 upfitter outfits (Monroe truck and equipment was one) that converted them to 4wd for customers who needed it. the standard upfit had 8 lug 19.5 rims, and if you paid more, they would machine up some 10 lug hubs for extra money.

Also, heavy hitters like Union Pacific got factory built crew cabs, I have seen with 9 and 11 foot bodies, but never longer. To my knowledge only those large fleet orders got the crew cab, otherwise GM would not build them.

People have swapped extended cabs on them when desired, but to my knowledge no upfitters offered it, and none were factory.

Lots of good info over at www.3500HD.com

If you desire to see one in person, keep an eye out for a local Ritchie Bros auction (rbauction.com) there is a pretty strong concentration of them on there compared to other online venues.

They are easy to spot with the tall grille with the filler panel and the 19.5 rubber.

They offered the 350 from 91-95 (possibly up through 96) the 454 from 1991-2000 and the 8.1L from 01-02 and the 6.5L Diesel from 92-2002 the NV4500 from 92-02, and the 4L80E from 91-00? and the 4L85E from 01?-02

To my understanding, no diesel and no manual offering in 91.

The transmissions are unique with a long tailshaft and a mounted drum parking brake.

The rear axle is a Dana 80, and a rockwell was offered very early, I think just 91-92. 4 wheel disc brakes, hence the reason for the driveline parking brake.

The HD were only offered to 02 carry over models. These are the 2 I've had so far a 93 454 and a 01 8.1. Great trucks, currently passivly looking for another.
